Good Comprehensive Text on the Fundamentals of Soil Mechanics
This book is a very comprehensive text for upper level undergraduate and graduate students in the field of soil science, civil and environmental engineering, and related fields. Dr. Isibashi is a professor and program director in the department of civil and environmental engineering at Old Dominion University, Virginia, U.S.A. and Dr. Hazarika is a professor in the department of civil and structural engineering at Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan. Dr. Isibashi is highly qualified and has considerable experience in teaching a variety of courses in soil mechanics and related fields. He also has a very impressive track record of professional publications and presentations and is a member of several scientific organizations. Dr. Hazarika has industrial experience as an engineer and has edited two books, along with numerous publications, and is also a member of several professional societies. The book encompasses the principles of physics and mathematics relating to soil mechanics. It is lucidly written with examples and problem sets with answers provided at the end, which reinforce the information provided. The chapter on clays and clay behavior is of particular importance, as they play a crucial role in understanding soil mechanics. The book also includes a chapter on soil classification, discussing the two different classification systems (USCS and AASHTO) commonly used by engineers. The physical aspects of soils such as compaction, water flow through soils, stress, settlements, shear strengths, pressure, and bearing capacity are devoted individual chapters. The concepts are discussed quantitatively and are well illustrated with diagrams, figures, and examples that provide a thorough understanding of soil mechanics. The concepts are also illustrated with exercises with solutions which help understanding of the underlying concepts. Each chapter also includes a brief summary at the end underscoring the key points of the chapter. A definition of concepts in the appendices would be beneficial. A list of formulae, laws, and other relevant data, for instance, hydraulic conductivity values, etc. in the appendices would also be of benefit. Overall, this book will be immensely beneficial for students and will serve as a good text for courses in soil physics, mechanics, and engineering geology.
